Are We Soulmates? (Part 2) Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball

Steven Forrest describes a soulmate as somebody who "messes with your soul." I like that. It implies that all of us are going to meet these special people along the way who our going to have a tremendous transformative impact on our foundation (our soul). We grow and evolve because of their presence in our lives. Everybody wants to find their one true soulmate, but even if you are lucky enough to find "the one," I suspect there will still be other people outside that relationship that will have a major soul shaping influence on you as well. Why limit ourselves to just one?

I wrote an article called Are We Soulmates? outlining my observations of strong synastry connections between people, and for the longest time, the title and the word "soulmates" really bugged me. Now with the above definition in my mind, I feel better about it. After learning (and being humbled by) a lot of astrology since then, I'm still pretty much in agreement with the points I made in that article. I would add some things though like squares, trines and sextiles are also important aspects to consider between the angles of one chart and the planets and angles of the other (keep the orbs super tight) and between the two sets of Sun, Moon and Ascendants.

Also I have to add regardless of how beautiful and powerful the astrological connection is it doesn't mean that you are destined to live happily ever after or that your relationship will ever get off the ground in the first place. There is something that is much bigger than astrology that decides that and I think mostly it depends on how dedicated the two people are to making it work. It's only after the universe decides to bring you together and you both consciously decide that you want to be together that the astrology really comes into play. This applies to all kind of relationships not just romantic ones.

Lucy and Ricky Ricardo

Whenever I see someone on TV who is interesting I run to the computer and see if I can find their astrology charts or birthdays. Yesterday I was watching the 1950s sitcom I Love Lucy and so I had to look up the charts for two stars of the show: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and that inspired me to write this follow up article today on soulmates.

Even though this is not a happily ever after story (or a tragedy), they are forever linked together like Buckingham and Nicks. This is an even more powerful bond though because they were business partners, marriage partners, and parents together to go along with the enormous fame from the TV shows that forever intertwined them together with the 1950s in the annals of time. Now I have to admit that when looking at the synastry between two people that obviously have some serious business together (i.e soulmates) I don't always see a lot of super strong ties but you can always count on seeing at least one or two ties that will explain the relationship and this usually involves the angles or lunar nodes. Not to worry in Lucy and Desi's case the connections are very obvious as you will see.

The fiery redhead Lucille Ball had an outgoing, expressive Leo Sun with a hard-as-nails Capricorn Moon in the Ascendant. Desi Arnaz was a sensitive Pisces with an equally sensitive and feeling Cancer Moon magnified to the extreme by it's conjunction with Pluto in the Ascendant. Just from those basic astrology observations we can see that these two people had very different natures but luckily opposites attract.

This is clearly shown astrologically by their Ascendants being almost directly opposite to each other. The Descendant and the 7th house in our own horoscope describe what we look for in another person and what we need in a relationship. Lucy has Cancer on the Descendant (conjunct Pluto) and Neptune in the 7th house so she needs emotional warmth, caring and domesticity (Cancer) in her partner and in her relationships with others. We can also expect with Neptune in the 7th that she would be asked to make great sacrifices in her marriage, she may over idealize her partner and look at her partner as a savior or become too much of a help mate to her partner. It's documented that Desi had problems with drugs and alcohol during their marriage and that's a classic Neptune in the 7th house situation.

Desi fit Lucy's 7th house bill perfectly with his Cancer Moon-Ascendant and his Pisces Sun and Mars (deposited by Neptune). Desi has Capricorn on his Descendant suggesting he needs structure and organization in his relationships and he's looking for an authority figure and somebody who will help further his career and social ambitions. Lucy fits his bill with her ambitious and authoritative Capricorn Moon and Ascendant. Their Moons overlay each other's seventh house of marriage, filling their partnership with strong emotions, both negative and positive, as they also provide one another with a great feeling of comfort and familiarity.

We see in the relationship chart, strong angular contacts with both Moon-Ascendants opposite to each other. Also we see that Lucy's Venus is right on Ricky's IC: another one of those love, comfort and familiarity aspects. The IC is the most private point so having somebody else's planet conjunct that point is going to affect you deeply and Venus is all about love so that helps in a marriage. We also see a nodal contact as well Desi's Jupiter is on Lucy's North Node suggesting that Desi provided encouragement and taught (Jupiter) taught her about earthy and material things like money (Taurus).

There is definitely a soulmate feel to this relationship. We only see a few negative aspects: her Saturn-Mars square his Mercury-Venus-Uranus, and her Mercury in Virgo opposite his Sun-Mars in Pisces. These both suggest that Lucy was probably more than a bit critical (Saturn and Virgo) of Ricky's extracurricular Pisces (escapism) and Aquarius (socializing) activities. Their marriage did end in divorce (I suppose they both had other soulmates to meet.) but it did last 20 years and they remained friends until Desi's death in 1986. Regardless, they will forever be linked together like their company, Desilu Productions, suggests.

I wrote an article a while back called Our Planets Aligned and almost without fail you'll see a major progression of one person's planet to the other person's natal or progressed planet (or angle) when they are having serious business together, usually when they first meet or get married. On Desi and Lucy's wedding day (November 30, 1940) Lucy's progressed Sun at 11Virgo32 was exactly opposite Desi's natal Sun at 11Pisces36. Isn't astrology amazing!!
